Grayscale x264 convertion

Andrew Gora
Yes, -vf format=gray is working!

Thanks to all, especially to Roger Pack.

Carl Eugen, yes, gray alone is sufficient. Moreover, format=yuv422p is
incompatible with the high profile.

Is it sufficient to code grayscale video with 50% of bitrate comparing
to color coding? I dont know about yuv420p (have no idea about planar
formats), but in yuv422 50% of bits belong to luminance channel.

Thanks!

I cannot really answer this question, but I believe you
severely underestimate the many features of video coding
and especially of h264.
(No.)
